Coloured gemstones are graded on colour first, everything else second. Two stones of the same species can trade at 10× the price purely based on the intensity and evenness of colour.
Sapphire
Kashmir, Burma and Ceylon origins command a premium. Look for a velvety cornflower or royal blue with even saturation. Extremely durable — perfect for engagement rings.
Ruby
"Pigeon blood" Burmese rubies are the ideal — a vivid red with a hint of blue. Untreated stones are rare and increasingly investment-grade.
Emerald
Colombian emeralds set the standard. Expect inclusions ("jardin") — they are part of the stone's character. Handle with more care than sapphires or rubies.
